Do you remember summer vacations as a kid? Road trips without iPads or GPS devices in the car? Windows down, fighting with your siblings, and the excitement of going somewhere even if you had been there a million times. Not a single care in the world except looking out the window at a landscape that captured your imagination. I specifically remember getting excited to hit the small towns in Northern Ontario that would lead us to Toronto. The memories never disappear.
As you look back at your kids in the backseat of your vehicle, what do you see? Are their heads down consumed by the technology that you KNOW will keep them quiet and avoid extra pee breaks or are they staring out the window with pure excitement of where you are headed? Maybe you are headed to the wrong place.
I’m all for technology (read about that here) BUT there’s just this thing that happens when we decide as a family to go on vacation. Spend time together, real quality time. Part of the reason my partner and I purchased land out in Golden, British Columbia was to show our kids that there’s a lot more to do in nature than we think lol. We were consumed by the suburban life for 15+ years and now when we head to our little slice of heaven we are reminded of WHY we chose to both move away from Ontario and head west.
Golden is ay more than gas and pee breaks.
Golden, British Columbia for a lot of people may have been a stop for gas, or a quick pee break but ladies and gents I’m telling you this place is unlike anywhere I have visited. To me, it’s a haven. It’s a place where I can reconnect to my core, & watch my children play like they are supposed to play.
It’s our second summer having our place and Kins and Rhett have both learned how to ride bikes, use pocket knives, watch for wildlife and understand different types of plants/ trees, etc. Things that maybe kinda sorta make you go ‘big deal’ but instead of watching them happen on Youtube — I have been blessed to share those experiences with them.
So for any families or ladies planning a trip – add a night or two in Golden, you’ll soak up great food, amazing beer, incredible hikes and even better — the people are amazing.
Here are my 5 reasons as to why you MUST visit Golden, B.C.
Have you ever seen a wolf up close? Have you ever had your picture taken with a wolf? Golden is home to the Northern Lights Wildlife Wolf Centre. This center is focused on teaching those who visit all about the wolves. For an additional cost, you can get your photo taken with a wolf. The visit and tour is about an hour long and worth every single minute! Check out the North Lights Wolf Centre here.
There is nothing better in the summer than walking a small downtown and seeing what the town has to offer. One of the key features in Golden’s downtown area is Spirit Square. It is filled with flowers, a fountain, the farmer’s market, outdoor concerts, and a little outdoor pub steps away. Plus it is next to reason 3 to visit this spectacular area.
The FOOD, this one has two parts….everyone in Golden LOVES great food. But more importantly, they love healthy, organic AMAZING tasting food. So one of my fave things to do is to hit up the farmers market on Wednesday. Fresh bread, fresh flowers, fresh fruit, and veggies – I’ll take ALL of it, please! They also have super cute lemonade stands and just a great vibe. The food truck hangs out there too – and it’s AMAZING. I absolutely cannot say enough good things about the Wednesday Farmers Market. Then there are all my fave restaurants from Eleven22 to Cedar House Chalet — guys you’ve gotta try it all. Or….just a beer at the Whitetooth brewery, and the truth guys – I don’t even drink beer but I love soaking up their vibe and watching my friends drink haha. So you have a LOT of choices, get off the highway skip the Mcds and go into town for a bite to eat if you’re driving through.
Well – this wouldn’t do Golden justice without mentioning: Kicking Horse Mountain. & the mountains surrounding all of Golden. They have a way to renew a tired soul. The best view of the mountains is while you are riding a gondola up. Afraid of heights? Don’t let that stop you – the Gondola is safe, and quite impressive! There are no words that can describe the beauty. When you get about halfway up to the top of the gondola ride, you must check out Boo the Grizzly bear.
When you make it to the VERY top of the mountain you HAVE to stop and grab a drink at the highest restaurant in Canada. Eagle’s Eye Restaurant. I have a bit of a story too – 12 years ago I wanted so badly to get married there BUT it was expensive as heck, I fully plan on hosting some type of event there for Hello Life Academy but for now — we just eat some fries and drink hot chocolate lol.
Are you an outdoor person? Do you love the thrill and excitement of exploring? Golden has so many opportunities for you to experience nature in all of its glory. Whitewater rafting, take a snowmobile tour, parasailing off of Mount Seven, dog sled adventures, golfing, mini-putt, kayaking, canoeing, SUP, mother of pearl the list goes and on. Whatever it is that you love to do outside Golden is your go-to destination.
This is just the tip of the mountain of activities that Golden has to offer. You will walk into Golden as a visitor and leave feeling like you are part of this beautiful community. I would almost say you’ll want to live there – but if that’s not your level of commitment you can always rent out one of the amazing rooms from our neighbours AirBnB.
You will want to come back time and time again. Can’t wait to see you at one of the amazing restaurants, pubs or by the river xo This pic is at the top of the Gondola just outside the Eagle Eyes Restaurant.
