Something that makes me super happy every single day is my 3pm bath with a book and the kids have come to know this as MOMS TIME OUT. Most modern marketing teaches you a lot about the digital space, but I want to take you offline a little bit today and into my top summer reads for female entrepreneurs!
Now that it’s summer I’m not sure how often I’ll hop into a smoking hot bath – but I am replacing that with Ice Cream and river walks while parking my butt on a bench to read a book (in silence).
I know this may put me in the ‘strange’ category but I love reading books over and over…and over…and over again.
I feel like I get to experience all the awesome words and inspiration in a different way each time – because —- depending on where I’m at in my life the lesson changes. So ladies, entrepreneurs….mom bosses, I’m excited for you to check out my 2019 Summer Reads.
These days, lots of us moms are using our laptops, smartphones and anything else digital to run our businesses and HOMES, I mean I tell Alexa to do things all day long…so when I get to pick up a REAL book my entire body gets excited lol.
Thanks to good, solid technology and an endless pool of creative ideas, it’s easier than ever to make a few extra dollars on the side, or even start a high-earning company whose work hours wrap around our family’s regular schedule.
Whatever you’ve got going on in your business this summer, make sure to keep a bit of time to yourself to catch up on some reading! Summertime is one of the best times to crack open a new book (physically or figuratively) and recharge your batteries.
It’s also a great opportunity to learn a few more business tricks or hear a few inspiring stories while everyone else is on ‘vacay’, I fully plan to continue audience building and creating strong connections online.
Here are the amazing books I’ve been consuming:
1. Sticky Branding by Jeremy Miller
This one’s for the mom who wants to learn more about marketing while she sits on the beach watching her kids splash in the waves and build castles in the sand. I found this book through brand photographer and social media strategist Brodie Pierson and can’t get enough of it. Jeremy Miller doesn’t just write about why marketing is important and what it can do for your business, he actually explains the process of getting from Point A to Point B.
I’ve been reading through this one slowly, really savouring it, so the book comes with me back and forth between home and our vacation spot in Golden, BC. This is truly an excellent read, one that you can flip through a few pages at a time and really learn something valuable every day.
As far as marketing books – go grab this one now. It’s one that I will keep on my shelf and always recommend to clients and business owners xo
2. The Path Made Clear by Oprah Winfrey
A few weeks ago I had the pleasure of getting tickets to see Oprah Winfrey LIVE in Calgary. I literally can’t stop thinking about it! What an amazing experience – and I got to spend it with my mom. Which is even more heartwarming. There were no cars given away but we did get a copy of her newest book and I rushed home to download it ASAP! Her book doesn’t talk about modern marketing – but it shows you what consistency, and trust does for your business! Thanks Oprah for inspiring all of us women who work from home.
I can’t say enough positive things about this amazing woman. Not only is she inspiring, she stood in front of a crowd of thousands and I felt like she was ONLY speaking to me. She’s got skills – and I want to be constantly around those. So her book is a MUST have in my life now.
It is almost overwhelming how powerful a woman she is! Oprah has been through more than her share of tragedy and hardship, and I’m sure you can agree that she has come out on top. She is a gift to this world xo
I’m halfway through this book and already I have benefitted from her deeply personal, inspirational stories. It’s not just Oprah, either: the top-rated media personality also includes motivational stories from her own catalog of celebrity friends, including Ellen DeGeneres, Jay-Z, and Eckhart Tolle. If there were a Chicken Soup for the Entrepreneurial Woman’s Soul…this would be it. And if you can – go see her live I would pay every month to watch her on a stage.
3. The Yes Brain: How to Cultivate Courage, Curiosity, and Resilience in Your Child by Daniel J. Siegel and Tina Payne Bryson
I have two beautiful but…let’s say very modern children. They spend time on their iPads watching YouTube whenever they can, and though I don’t have anything against my kids getting in some quality screen time, I am also a very experience-based parent. If we lived in a world where I could take my kids out of school and just show them the world for a year, I would do it! Though I do plan to do just that one day (when they are already educated, mind you,) for now I’ve found an amazing school for them. My kids are enrolled at Footprints for Learning Academy in Airdrie, Alberta, and it’s a place where they can be creative, intelligence and social all at once. Of course, parenthood is never perfect. After a night of arguing with Kinsley to get off her iPad, I was thrilled to find the following passage just a few pages into The Yes Brain:
“This Yes Brain mindset is what we want for our kids, so that they learn to view obstacles and new experiences not as paralyzing impediments but simply as challenges to be faced and overcome and learned from.”
Moms, read this book! We all spend a lot of time on personal development, but it also feels great to read something that helps us develop strong children who want to explore and learn about life. If you love experiences, you will love this books approach to parenting xo
Those are my suggestions for now, so happy reading!
